Rodrick King Sparks was elected to the Lee’s Summit R-7 Board of Education in April 2026, continuing his dedication to serving students, families, and the community. He first earned a seat on the board in 2021, making history as the first African American male elected, and later became the first African American to serve as Board President.
Mr. Sparks and his wife, Lauren, are proud parents of two children. Their son, Frank, attends Northwest Missouri State University, and their daughter, Ryleigh, is a student in the district. Being a husband and father continues to shape his commitment to ensuring every child has access to opportunity, support, and success.
Driven by a lifelong heart for people, Mr. Sparks has served in a variety of roles, including youth director, youth pastor and mentor, always focused on guiding and uplifting the next generation. His leadership extends into his professional career, where he previously served as President of United Steelworkers Local 13, advocating for workers’ rights, fair wages, and strong benefits. He now works as an Escrow Assistant, helping protect buyers and sellers throughout the real estate transaction process.
Mr. Sparks remains deeply involved in his community. He serves as President of the Wedgewood Pointe POA and as a board member of Lee’s Summit Cares, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting local families.
In his spare time, Mr. Sparks enjoys spending time with his family, singing, traveling, and giving back to those in need. He is grounded in his faith and guided by the words of Nelson Mandela:
“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
